Our Heritage

A Craft Six Centuries in the Making

Khurja is a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India, recognised across the world as one of the country's oldest and most important ceramic centres. The story began in the 14th century, when artisans who travelled with Timur's army settled in Khurja and brought their pottery skills with them. What started as simple red clay vessels has, over six hundred years, evolved into one of India's most distinctive ceramic traditions.

At Khurja Pottery Hub, we work directly with master potters whose families have shaped clay in this town for generations. Every piece in our collection is hand thrown or hand moulded, glazed using time tested techniques, and hand painted with the floral motifs that have made Khurja pottery instantly recognisable. We do not mass produce. We curate.

Our role is simple. We connect the artisans of Khurja with homes that value authenticity, slow craft, and objects with meaning. When you buy a piece from us, you are not just buying ceramic — you are buying a continuation of a 600 year old tradition.

How Khurja Pottery is Made | From Clay to Your Table
The Process

From Clay to Your Table

Each piece passes through six stages of careful craft before it reaches your home.

  1. Sourcing the Clay

Local clay is collected, cleaned, and aged for weeks until it reaches the right consistency.

  2. Shaping by Hand

The clay is thrown on a wheel or hand moulded by artisans whose families have done this work for generations.

  3. First Firing

Each piece is fired in traditional kilns at over 1,000°C, giving it strength and durability.

  4. Hand Painting

Skilled painters apply the signature floral and geometric motifs of Khurja using natural mineral pigments.

  5. Glazing

A lead free glaze is applied to seal the surface, lock in the design, and make the piece food safe.

  6. Final Firing & Quality Check

A second firing fuses the glaze. Every piece is then inspected by hand before it ships.

Six stages. Hundreds of hands. One perfect piece.

Frequently Asked Questions | Khurja Pottery Hub
Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Khurja pottery, our products, delivery, and bulk orders.

01 Is Khurja pottery microwave safe?

Yes. All Khurja Pottery Hub ceramics are fired at high temperatures and finished with a lead free glaze, making them safe for use in microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers under normal household conditions.

02 Is Khurja pottery the same as Jaipur blue pottery?

No. Khurja pottery is made from local clay and fired at high temperatures, giving it strength and a smooth glazed finish. Jaipur blue pottery is made from a quartz based body, is fired at lower temperatures, and is more decorative than functional. Both are GI tagged Indian crafts, but the materials, techniques, and uses are different.

03 How do I care for handmade ceramic dinnerware?

Wash by hand or in the dishwasher using a mild detergent. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving a piece directly from the freezer to a hot oven. With basic care, Khurja pottery lasts for decades.

04 Are Khurja Pottery Hub products lead free?

Yes. Every piece is glazed using lead free, food safe materials, suitable for daily use with hot and cold food.

05 How long does delivery take?

Most orders across India are delivered within 4 to 7 business days. Each piece is hand inspected and packed with protective material to ensure it arrives safely.

06 Do you offer cash on delivery?

Yes. Cash on delivery is available across India on most pin codes, alongside online payment options.

07 Can I order in bulk for my restaurant, café, or store?

Yes. We work with restaurants, cafés, hotels, resorts, and retail partners on bulk and custom orders. Use our enquiry form to request a quote and a sample.
